Most people who visit Yosemite drive four hours from the Bay Area, wait in a reservation queue, and spend their trip fighting traffic on Valley roads. There’s another way in — and it starts in June Lake.

Why the East Entrance Changes Everything
Yosemite Valley draws nearly four million visitors a year. Tuolumne Meadows, accessed through the Tioga Pass entrance on the east side, draws a fraction of that — and offers scenery that rivals anything in the park.
From June Lake, your drive to the East Entrance takes about 25 minutes on US-395 north to Hwy 120. Once inside, you’re immediately in subalpine terrain: granite domes, high-altitude meadows, and the Tuolumne River winding through open country. Cathedral Peak and Lembert Dome are accessible within minutes of the entrance. Tenaya Lake, one of the most beautiful spots in the Sierra, is 20 minutes further in.
The valley still exists if you want it — it’s about two hours from Tioga Pass — but most guests who base themselves in June Lake find they don’t bother. The eastern side of Yosemite has everything: day hikes, backcountry access, wildlife, and solitude that the valley simply can’t offer anymore.
One Important Note: Tioga Pass Is Seasonal
Hwy 120 over Tioga Pass closes for winter, typically from late October through late May or early June depending on snowpack. During closure, the East Entrance is not accessible.

When the pass is closed, June Lake is still an excellent base for Yosemite — the park’s west-side entrances remain open year-round, and the drive takes about two hours each way.
June Lake vs. Lee Vining vs. Mammoth Lakes
Lee Vining is the closest — about 15 minutes from Tioga Pass — but it’s a small highway town with limited lodging options and almost nothing to do when you’re not in the park.
Mammoth Lakes is the largest and most amenity-rich, with full resort infrastructure. It’s also 45 minutes from the East Entrance, more crowded, and significantly more expensive.
June Lake is the sweet spot. You’re 25 minutes from Tioga Pass, in a genuine mountain village with the June Lake Loop, four alpine lakes, June Mountain ski area, and the Eastern Sierra landscape right outside your door. It’s not a highway stop — it’s a destination in itself.
What to Do When You’re Not in Yosemite
The June Lake Loop is a 16-mile scenic drive with four alpine lakes: June Lake, Gull Lake, Silver Lake, and Grant Lake. The fishing is exceptional — all four lakes are stocked, and Rush Creek offers fly fishing. June Mountain ski area is five minutes from Whispering Pines and offers family-friendly skiing with free kids’ passes.
